Improve Your Health by Walking

walkingWho said that you can always stay healthy when you jog, run, hit the gym, lift weights or even do all those complicated exercises that are seen on TV? Although these physical activities can help you stay fit and healthy, not everyone has the time to do them on a regular basis. However, this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to keep your weight in check or your blood pumping properly since there is a simple way to stay active and the best part is that it is completely free. What is this you ask? Why, walking of course.

Why Walk?

Walking can give you plenty of health benefits. Among these are:

  • Keeps your weight in check
  • Improve your mood
  • Enhance your coordination and sense of balance
  • Manage any health conditions such as heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure

Learn the Walk

You might think that walking is just about putting one foot in front of the other. Although this is the basic of walking, there are other factors to consider as well. Proper posture is important if you want to get the most out of walking. Here’s how to walk properly.

  • Keep your head up.
  • Relax your neck, back and shoulders.
  • Slightly tighten your stomach while keeping your back straight.
  • Swing your arms naturally with a slight bending at the elbows.
  • Roll your feet starting from your heel towards your toes.

Aside from learning the proper walking posture, you should also wear the right gear for walking. Shoes with arch support are highly recommended as they help reduce the stress on your feet. Search for places where you can walk freely and with less chance of you getting injured. Also, just like with any type of exercise, you should start your walking regimen with a warm up as this will help prevent your muscles from becoming sore afterwards.

A good warm up before your walking exercise is to slowly walk for 5-10 minutes tops. This will help loosen the muscles and ready your feet for more walking. After you finish your circuit you should also cool down to reduce the stress on your muscles.

One of the best things about walking is that you can start slowly. Walking for 30 minutes daily can help in improving your overall health. However, if you aren’t able to reach 30 minutes, starting at 15 minutes will suffice for the meantime. Even if you miss a day, it won’t hurt at all since you can do this exercise on other days.
