Billionaire Barry Diller has launched a service that transmits live local TV feeds to iPhones and iPads.
For now the service that has been named Aereo is only available by invitation. Diller plans to gradually broaden its access in the coming weeks and then formally launching it in cities other than New York. Aereo allows subscribers to use their internet browsers to access streams from 27 channels on a payment of $12 per month.
If the service survives, it can usher in a new era of technological amalgamation allowing faster exchange of communication and greater connectivity between the world. However, it goes without saying that the service is likely to meet with stiff resistance from TV stations, challenging its right to use their broadcasts.
