Movies to Watch This Weekend

The weekend is here and if you don’t feel like going all the way to the theater to watch a film, here we have for your our pick of movies that you can watch cuddled up on your couch tonight. And since we are just one day away from the Oscars, our recommendations come from Knowzzle’s personal top 5 favourite movies out of the 9 that have been nomainated for the Best Film award by the Academy.

1. Hugo

Based on Brian Selznick’s novel ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’ around the life of a little boy who lives alone in a Paris railway station, Hugo is among director Martin Scorsese’s finest works. The film boast an ensemble cast of Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer, Jude Law and Christopher Lee. With 11 Oscar nominations (including that for the best picture), Hugo is the most nominated movie for 2011.

2. The Tree of Life

This critically acclaimed drama tries to document the origins of life by narrating the story of a middle-aged man’s childhood memories from the 1950s. The powerful performances given by Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain coupled with the movie’s unique storyline make up for an intense movie-watching experience. The Tree of Life has bagged 3 Oscar nominations.

3. The Descendants

Based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, this action-comedy has already won 2 Golden Globes and is competing for Oscars under 8 categories! The Descendants, having such actors as George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard and Beau Bridges has received a positive rating of 90% by film critics making it one of the best movies to have hit the theaters in 2011.

4. Midnight in Paris

If you’ve ever been to Paris, this movie is sure to keep you completely engaged throughout the length of its reel. This directorial masterpiece by Woody Allen revolves around the experience of a screenwriter who is propelled to acknowledge the shortcomings of his relationship with his fiancée and their diametrically opposing take on life owing to a magical experience in Paris that occurs each night at midnight. This Owen Wilson starrer has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards.

5. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

This drama movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer. Although the very title of this film demands attention but we especially recommend it to you for the memorable performances powered by two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. Nominated for two Academy Awards, ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ is sure to make your Saturday night less dull.
